We've been having family movie nights lately at our house. Last night we watched Midway. It is the story of the Battle of Midway and focuses a lot on the bomber pilots.

It is one intense movie and we all thought it was really good if you happen to have some time stuck in the house...

The movie reminded me of a story about research done on bomber planes during WWII. The Center for Naval Analysis was working hard to discover ways they could help prevent bombers from being shot down.

Would the planes would come back they started looking at all the places the planes had been shot. They noticed that most of the damage was being done to the body and wings.

Their solution was obviously to start adding more armor to these areas to protect the most commonly damaged areas. This seemed like the way to go but one man did not think so.

They were leaving out a very important piece of the puzzle. A statistician named Abraham Wald pointed out this crucial information.

These were the planes that made it back.

The planes that made it home had very little damage to the engine, cockpit, and tail. These were the most vulnerable parts of the plane so they decided to bulk up the armor in those areas instead.

The result was a huge success and saved many lives while also creating more successful missions.

You may be looking at your life right now and all you see is the bullet holes all over your life right now.

-the loss of lives

-the loss of jobs

-an uncertain future-what your kids are missing out on

Or any number of things that have gone wrong. For now, I want you to focus on something else.

What has held you together during this time?

It could be your faith or family or maybe you've held it together because it's the only choice you've got. Focus on strengthening that because it is what is helping you get through this.

The other thing you need to focus on is taking care of yourself right now.  Especially if you have people depending on you.

You will have bad days, you will not be motivated, you will not feel like doing anything. You may even feel paralyzed right now.

You have to take action though.

Don't wait on that magical day when the stars align, you are well-rested, and you have the perfect hour of silence in the house to workout.

It's not coming.

Even if it is just 5 minutes, you could:

-do a short workout

-focus on your breathing

-pray or meditate

-plan 3 meals for the week

-walk around the house

-stretch

We are going to get through this but we have to stay on top of our health. Mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual health all matter.

It has been a shock to the system but this could be a long term thing. Start creating healthy habits in your new normal.
