You rush through the workout, hurry to get to in the shower, take a quick shower, dry off, and get dressed. Then it just keeps coming. It's unstoppable and it's ruining your clothes.
The after-workout sweat.
Any time you workout (or just walk outside in Alabama this time of year) it is going to raise your body temperature. The body always wants to stay at the same temperature (homestasis), so it will produce sweat to help cool you down.
Sweat is a good thing! If you are working hard and realize you have stopped sweating, stop immediately and get to cooler temps/hydrate. Otherwise you are headed for heat exhaustion or a heat stroke.
We know we need sweat, but it can be pretty awkward to show back up at work a sweaty mess. Not to mention that uncomfortable feeling of sitting in re-sweaty clothes after a shower.
Here are a few ways to speed up the body cooling process and stop the sweat:
1. Put ice water in your veins
Studies have shown that people who drink ice water sweat less than people who drink room temperature water. Once the ice water hits the stomach it tells the brain to start cooling the body. Drink ice water before, during, and after your workouts to cut down on the sweat.
2. Do a cool down
It's right there in the title! You never want to just stop a workout abruptly. Spend a few minutes at the end of your workout doing lower intensity movements like walking or stretching. Not only will it help start the body cooling process, but it will also keep you from feeling light headed or even fainting. A cool down will also help you not be as sore. Always cool down.
3. Cold shower
Taking a cold shower, even when you are hot, is not ideal for many people. But it is worth it! A cold shower can really speed up the full body cooling process.
4. In an emergency
Sometimes you get in a big rush and don't have the time or resources to make the other 3 happen. If that is the case you can do what I did yesterday. I ran cold water on the inside of my wrists. There is a high concentration of blood vessels there so it can speed up cooling. You can also put an ice pack or cold water bottle on the back of your neck because the arteries in the neck are close to the skin.
Hope those help you. Now go forth and sweat!
