Are you ready for 2019? This is going to be the year we make things happen! Just like last year! Wait...
Maybe you crushed your goals last year, but if you're like most of us things probably could have gone better. So what are we going to do different this year?
First, you need to start with a compelling goal. What is your Why? "I want to lose 30 pounds" is a great goal, but why do you want to lose the weight? You need to dig down deep and find the true reason for your goal.
Here is an example from someone who wanted to lose 30 pounds and the process of how she got to her Why.
-I just want to look better. You need to go deeper!
-I want to feel better when I look in the mirror, have more confidence. Closer, but you need to go even deeper.
-I want to be a healthy role model for my daughter. I think we have something there, dig a little more.
-I want to lose the weight because I was overweight as a kid and was constantly bullied for it. I developed an unhealthy relationship with food and exercise and I will not pass that on to my daughter! I will lose this weight the right way and model good behavior for her.
That was a powerful goal for her from that moment on. Compare the raw emotion in the last statement, to the unemotional goal of "I want to lose 30 pounds." That's what we are looking for.
More on this example in Friday's e-mail. There is a bit of a plot twist in there that we can all learn from.
This is not an easy process and can actually be pretty painful to work through, especially if it involves deep seated emotions that have been with you a long time. But it is such a potent method of goal setting it can be life changing.
Your homework is to find out what your number one goal for 2019. And then forge down into the depths of that goal to find your Why. Find something that taps into your emotions and then tie that back into your original goal.
And it doesn't have to be a negative emotion! As humans we are either looking to avoid pain (like the above example) or seek pleasure. Your deep emotion might be tied into seeking pleasure. That works too!
Next, write that goal down somewhere you will see it every day. Every time you look at that goal, remind yourself Why you want it so bad.
In Friday's e-mail we will get more into what you need to add to that goal to ensure your success.
