My son reminded me of one of my core values with how he treated one of this basketball teammates the other day. Let me backtrack a little and then I will hopefully tie all of this together in the end.
When my son first started playing basketball, he was never one of the best players. He has always been tall, but being tall usually means you are as coordinated as a newborn deer on ice.
He made it on to some really good teams, but never felt like he was truly part of the team because he was not contributing. The other kids would all hang out together in small groups and he would do his own thing. It was not the other kids' fault, he just didn't feel comfortable. But the other kids started to include him more and more, always cheering him on when he did good.
Fast forward to today and he has improved tremendously, has a lot more confidence in his game and in himself. There was a kid at his practice this week in a similar situation. Real big kid, hasn't been playing very long, doesn't really have a group of kids he hangs out with. My son went out of his way to engage him and make sure he was not alone.
Experiencing something yourself has a lasting impact on you.
That is why one of my core values has always been "Everyone gets results and no one gets left behind no matter their size, shape, or ability". Because I have seen some programs (not naming any names), where you are left behind if you can't keep up. If you are not strong enough, fast enough, or fit enough that is on you, see you later.
That is NOT how we do it at our boot camps. I have seen the looks on the faces of people who were left behind. It's heartbreaking and discouraging. It is one of the reasons I started my own business, to help people of all ages, shapes, and sizes. Just no dudes 😉
I want to challenge you to look around and see who you can encourage. Who around you needs to lifted up, inspired, and helped? I guarantee you, you will have a lasting impression on that person and they will want to pass it on too.
PS-if you want to come be a part of a program where you never get left behind, please come join us. We would love to have you be a part of HABC family.
