80% is not a very exciting number for the most part. Unless you got similar grades to me in school. 80% was pretty awesome then.

But most people don't get real excited about 80%. But that is actually a number that can help you get great results.

Here are three ways 80% can work for you:

1. Eat until you are 80% full
If you are trying to lose weight this year, this is a great place to start. And step one for this is slowing down how fast you eat. Step two is to avoid distractions while you are eating.

Then step three is to start mindfully eating where you tune into the signs and signals your body is giving you. Then you eat until satisfied, not stuffed.

2. Get it right 80% of the time
You see it every year at the gym in January. The first two weeks it is CRAZY! Then it slowly fades away. A big reason for that is people set themselves up for failure by setting expectations way too high.

They plan to exercise EVERY day. Then when something comes up, they miss one day and feel like a failure. Or eat one "bad" meal and toss the whole diet out because they "failed".

Give yourself the grace of the 80/20 rule. Shoot to get it right 80% of the time. Allow yourself to have days where you slip up, then just go right back to work.

You will mess up and you will make mistakes. It's all part of the deal, keep going.

3. If you are not at least 80% confident you can do it, your goal is too big
Chances are you have already set some goals for yourself this year. Look back through those goals and give them a 1-10 rating. 1 being "No way I can do this" and 10 being "I got this no problem!

Any goals that aren't 8-10 are too big and you need to shrink them down and/or make them more manageable. It is all about the psychology of small wins.

If you want to lose 30 pounds, losing that in 3 months is more than likely not going to happen. But in one year? Definitely possible.

So many people get crushed by unrealistic expectations. Many great things are possible by starting as small things.
