Sorry if that e-mail title sounds like a Nextdoor post, but stick with me here.
730am Saturday. My wife is taking my son to basketball practice, I'm relaxing and enjoying as many Nevada ballot-counting memes as possible.
Then I get the call.
Wifey- I have a weird request for you...
Turns out there is a dog on the loose with tags on not far from our house. So I spring into action!
Put on my Dog Rescuing Suit (DRS) which consists of sweatpants and a long sleeve shirt. Then I loaded up my pockets with treats, grabbed a leash, and hopped on my son's bike.
I am tearing through the neighborhood on this bike shifting gears like I'm in the Fast and the Furious. Then it happened.
The chain fell off the bike.
Rational me knows that it seriously takes like one minute to fix his problem. But dog saving me has tunnel vision and just wants to stay in motion.
So I throw the bike down and take off running like Forrest Gump. Same running style, less speed.
By the time I get there, the dog is nowhere to be found 🙁 I search the surrounding areas for awhile but he is not there.
Godspeed dog, hope you made it back to your owners.
In failure, there is always a lesson:

Don't sacrifice long term success for short term gain.

It is so common to see people do whatever it takes to lose weight to get ready for an event or exercise themselves into the ground to do a race.
Then the weight comes back on and then some.
Then they experience aches and pains or even muscle tears that plague them for a long time after the race is over with.
Don't get me wrong, there is a place for short term challenges and I love to see people push themselves and try new things. As long as you can safely do them, that is.
Say you want to lose 30 pounds for example. You could do a juice/cleanse/detox/colonic/starvation plan and that weight would come off pretty quick.
But then what?
For most people, it leads to the weight all piling back on, frustration, feeling like a failure. Because you never used any skills (things like eating slower and proper portion control) that can help you lose weight.
Challenge yourself and keep figuring out what your limits are, but keep the big picture in mind.  Get a plan that works for you, be patient, and you will get there.
