Does this look like the face of a kid who likes to sit for extended periods of time?

This weekend I went to a wedding and took my 8 year old son. This was a Catholic wedding, so it took over an hour for the ceremony. Then we were sitting around waiting for the wedding party to do pictures.

8 year olds and extended periods of time sitting do not mix very well. Things were looking dicey, he was looking miserable and since my wife was in the wedding party, going home was not an option.

The magic fix? iPad? Candy? All viable options, but the one that seems to work the best is to let him go outside and run like a crazy person.

15 minutes of him running from tree to tree while I timed him and he was good to go. You ever put a timer on your kids or is this just a trainer thing?

Also, this week I was working out at a playground near my house when an old man came up walking his two dogs. He seemed like he wanted to talk so I went over to him.

He wanted to ask me about my boot camp and what that "thing hanging from the money bars is". I was using a TRX.

Then he told me about his workout plan. He said he walks his dogs every day and goes to the gym to work his legs 3 days a week.

"I used to lift all those heavy weights with my arms, but at my age what's the use in getting all these big arm muscles if I can't even walk to the next weight machine!"

I think we can all take away two lesson from these two people, no matter what age we are.

The first lesson to me was pretty simple. If I am bored, fidgety, grumpy, not feeling right, etc... before I medicate myself with computers, TV, or food why not go exercise for 15 minutes and see if I feel better? My guess is this will work more times than not.

The send lesson I took away was this. Am I working out to impress others or to improve my quality of life?

I think this is a huge question we should all ask ourselves. Nothing wrong with looking better and feeling better, but do it for you not to impress someone else!

When are trying to impress others, we tend to do workouts we don't like and don't fit our personalities. Find a workout you like, that will get you results, and that you will stick to for a long time not a workout that is the best for one of your friends.
