Every week I go through and check out some of the latest research that is being done in health and fitness. My favorite sources are professional magazines I get, research websites, and talking to other people in the industry. I wanted to share a few interesting things I learned ACE Certified Fitness Journal’s February edition. Tidbits I found interesting and helpful, so I hope you do as well.
All types of exercise prevent depression. Researchers in Australia found that regular (emphasis on regular) physical activity of at least one hour per week can prevent depression. This was true for people of all ages and genders. The researchers are still trying to find out why exercise works so well to fight depression. Their theory is that it is the combined impact of physical and social benefits.
Nearly 1 in 4 US adults is considered obese. A report in The Lancet stated that 1 in 12 deaths around the world could be prevented if people would exercise for 30 minutes a day, five days a week. That is mind blowing to me.
It is recommended that Type 2 diabetics do resistance training at least twice a week. This will help them improve glycemic control, insulin resistance, body fat percentage, blood pressure, and strength.
Many of our youth these days have Exercise Deficit Disorder, a fancy way of saying they don’t exercise enough. It is recommended that they get 60 minutes of moderately vigorous activity every day, but many kids are not getting that. Unfortunately these habits will continue into adulthood if not addressed now. Help your kids and grandkids find a way to stay active and get in that hour each day! I have found that it really helps if you do the activity with them. Great for them and great for you as well. Win, win. I picked out a few more things that I think you will like as well.
I will share those with you on Monday. Hope you have an awesome weekend!
